7 Days Sleep Out Fundraising Campaign Event
Join Us for the 7 Days Sleep Out Fundraising Campaign In Solidarity with Homeless Women and Children in Nigeria
Homelessness remains a critical and deeply concerning issue in Nigeria, affecting millions of individuals and families. Recent reports reveal that approximately 24 million Nigerians are homeless, representing about 13% of the nation’s population. The situation is even more severe in major urban centers like Lagos, where an estimated 70% of the city’s 14 million residents live in informal settlements.
Among those most affected are women and children, who face heightened vulnerability due to factors such as domestic violence, economic instability, and limited access to education. Alarmingly, about 8.6 million children in Nigeria are currently homeless, leaving them exposed to violence, exploitation, health risks, and deprivation of essential services.
In response to this urgent crisis, we are launching the 7 Days Sleep-Out Fundraising Campaign—a community-driven initiative aimed at raising the funds needed to establish the Reform Safe House and an inclusive Resource Center. These facilities will provide shelter, support, and sustainable pathways to empowerment for homeless women and children across Nigeria.
The Reform Safe House will serve as a sanctuary for only women and children facing homelessness, domestic violence, or other adversities. The children will be from age 12-18.
A temporary haven offering protection and essential amenities.
Access to counseling, healthcare, legal aid, and basic necessities to help individuals stabilize and heal.
The Resource Center will be an integral part of the safe house, designed to empower individuals through education and skill development. Notably, the center will be open to all genders, welcoming community members to acquire valuable skills. It will offer.
Courses in entrepreneurship, technology, fashion, hairdressing, makeup artistry, painting, electrician, mechanic, carpentry, agriculture, and other high-demand fields.
Literacy classes, tutoring, and scholarships for children
Career counseling and guidance to help individuals secure employment.
Workshops and activities to promote resilience, collaboration, and personal growth.
Homeless women face heightened risks due to their vulnerable circumstances.
Here are some of the critical dangers they encounter:
Homeless women are at a significantly higher risk of sexual assault and violence.
The stress of homelessness can lead to increased substance abuse, exacerbating health and safety issues.
Some homeless women may engage in survival sex to meet basic needs, exposing them to further exploitation and health risks
Without stable housing, women are more vulnerable to physical, emotional, and sexual violence, often from intimate partners or strangers.
In certain regions, cultural practices can lead to women being targeted for ritualistic purposes, increasing their risk of violence.
Homeless women are disproportionately affected by various forms of violence, including sexual assault and domestic abuse.
Homelessness in Nigeria is a pressing issue, with approximately 24 million Nigerians affected, accounting for about 13% of the country’s population. Women and children are particularly vulnerable, with an estimated 8.6 million homeless children in the country.
